Crescent moon on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined crescent moon sits on the wrist of a hand held up in a loose fist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a grey-black tone. The pale, plain background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the hand.

Nell had been mending the big top since the frost came early, stitching patches over the tears where the rain got in. Old Mr Hallam wanted the crescent on the ring curtain repainted before the last stop at Shelby Common, though nobody in the company could say who had first drawn it. It was only an outline, a single thin line of black ink on a field of faded blue, and the lamps behind it made it look like a door left ajar.

"Leave the middle bare," Hallam said, leaning on his cane by the wagon steps. "People don't come for the moon. They come to see what's inside it." Nell did not argue. Her hands were steadier with a needle than with a brush, and she had learned that a line only has to be sure of where it begins and ends.
The last night the crowd was thin, a dozen children on the benches and a few farmers who had come for the cheap seats. Carl the strongman sat out the pyramid, and the lion tamer's cat slept on the sawdust. When the trapeze boy opened his hands and caught nothing but air, nobody screamed. The moon on the curtain stayed where it was.
Afterwards Nell unhooked the curtain and folded it across her knee. The paint had cracked along the outline where the canvas bent, and in the dark the empty crescent looked less like something missing than something kept back for later. She ran her thumb along it, counting the stitches. Enough, she thought, for one more season.
