Small crescent moon on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small black crescent moon outline sits on the side of the ribcage on bare skin. The linework is thin and even, and the tattoo is the only point of dark ink in the frame. The monochrome photograph is framed close, with a hand gripping the upper arm to the right against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon came down the pass in the third week of thaw, when the snow had gone grey and the goats grew restless. Old Marta, who kept the hut where the track crests the saddle, saw it first as a white thread caught on the rocks below Kessel Gap. By morning it had worn itself into a crescent no bigger than a thumbnail, lying in a hollow where the wind could not reach.

The village sent up three men with a sledge and a length of rope. They argued about whether it was a moon or a lamp, whether it was cold, whether it belonged to the valley or to the sky. Marta said nothing. She had watched the moon all her life from her doorway and knew how it kept its own counsel, waxing when it pleased. When the men reached for it, the crescent slipped from their fingers and rolled, bright and patient, back toward the cliff edge.

Then the youngest, Tobiah, who was seventeen and had not yet learned to be afraid of sensible things, knelt and laid his bread knife flat beside it, the way you would set down a cloth beside a sleeping cat. He said he would wait. He sat through the night in his coat, and at first light the crescent had climbed onto the blade and rested there like a curl of frost. He carried it down the path in his cupped palm without spilling any of its light.

In the hut below the saddle the knife still hangs by the door, and on cold mornings its edge is warm to the touch, as if something small has only just stepped off it.
