Small cross tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows a small, simple cross tattoo on the inside of an ankle, photographed from behind while the wearer stands in pink canvas slip-on shoes on a wooden deck. A close-up panel shows the same cross in fine, even black-grey linework with light shading. The composition is a three-panel square collage with cream borders, with the tattoo as a small detail among the shoes and deck.

The bell over the door rang twice, the way it did when someone was in a hurry and didn't want to admit it, and Nell Gorrie looked up from the bench to find Owen Tregarth dripping on her mat. He had a pair of pink canvas slip-ons in a carrier bag, the soles worn through at the toes and the laces grey with salt. He set them on the counter as if they might bite.

"They were my daughter's," he said, though Nell hadn't asked. "She bought them with her first wages from the crab co-op. Says they're the only shoes that never pinch on the boat." He wanted them ready for Saturday. Nell turned one over in her hands, feeling the canvas stiff with sea air, and said she could patch the toes and re-stitch the welt by Friday. Then she asked him what he wanted kept, because people always wanted something kept.
He thought about it longer than most. "Something inside the heel," he said at last. "Where nobody sees it but her." So Nell threaded her needle with dark navy and stitched a small cross into the lining, the same cross her mother had worked onto every tea towel in the house on Quay Row, one short stroke and one long, pulled tight so it would not fray.
On Saturday the shoes were back on the counter, double-knotted and dry. Owen paid in coins and left without his change, which Nell found on the step later, weighted under a pebble. She put the pebble in her apron pocket. Later that week she saw a girl in pink shoes crossing the harbour wall, the sun flat on the water, and every step she took landed square on the place where the cross sat hidden.
