Small cross tattoo on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small, simple black cross tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand with French manicure nails. The cross has plain, solid linework with a small inner loop at its centre. The ink is black on pale skin, and the hand is held up against a dark teal steering wheel with a car logo visible behind it.

Dear Marion, you'll laugh at me, but I have finally got the damson in against the south wall, and the spade turned up the thing I told you about on the phone. It is a little iron cross, no longer than my finger, black with old dirt, with a loop of wire twisted through the middle where the arms meet. Mr Pryce says it came off the lych gate when they replaced it in the fifties, and the men buried the scraps rather than take them to the scrapyard. I have put it on the windowsill to dry, next to the seed packets.

I have been trying to decide what the loop is for. Pryce thinks it was a hanging ring, the way you'd string a cross on a cord. Mrs Ashdown from the bell tower reckons it was a rivet and the wire is simply rust. I prefer to think somebody meant it. A small thing made by hand to be held in a fist or pinned to a coat, then lost in soil that has been turning over for sixty years.
Anyway, I told Pryce I would clean it up for the church flower rota, and then I thought better of it. I have wrapped it in your old blue scarf and put it in the tin with the cuttings, under the sweet pea labels. When the damson fruits in August I will bring you a jar, and the cross can sit on the sill where it has been since Tuesday, catching the light through the glass the way it did before anybody thought to bury it.
