Small cross tattoo on the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a person seen from behind with long blonde hair pulled to one side. A small, simple black cross sits at the base of the neck, with a fine chain and pendant hanging just below it. The ink appears solid and dark grey-black against grey clothing, set in a plain indoor room.

The cage came up at the shift bell with only two men in it, and the widow Ferrier knew the third was still below before anyone said a word. She stood at the pit head with a tin of cold tea in her hands and nowhere to set it down.

Old Harriet Pollard had a rule in Scarrow Lane that every child wore a small cross from the day they could walk. Harriet cut them herself from scraps of pit-prop oak, strung them on waxed thread, and hung the spares on a row of nails above the lamp room door. Nobody argued with Harriet. Her own cross had gone black with dust years before, and she kept it under her collar where it could not catch on a hook.

Ruth Ferrier, who was eleven and too small for the cage, took a cross from the nail, pulled the thread round her neck and tied it at the back, the way Harriet had shown her. Then she went to the wet stone by the winding engine and sat down with the tea. The engineman told her to go home. She did not go home.

The cage came up again near dawn. The third man was Tom Ferrier, her father, grey to the eyebrows and coughing, and the first thing he did was reach for the child on the stone. Harriet, who had come down the lane in her shawl, put a hand on the girl's shoulder and said nothing. Ruth felt the little oak cross warm where it lay against her skin, and she understood that warmth was the only thing she had been asked to keep.
