Small crown tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small crown sits on the side of a finger, drawn with thin outlines and soft grey shading. The crown has a rounded base band, a domed body and three pointed tips, with a few highlighted areas left pale. The ink is almost entirely grey and black against warm skin, and the photo is taken close up with a warm vignette and a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Old Maud found the crown in the moat in the second week of the thaw, when she was raking reeds for her roof and her fingers closed on something cold with three points to it. It was black with silt, its band rounded and worn, its domed top still holding a little of the grey light. Nobody in Harrowmere had seen a crown since the last lord walked out of the broken gatehouse, and most agreed it was a thing to be left alone.

Maud was never one for agreeing. She rubbed the silt off with her thumb and carried it down to the mill, where Edith was grinding barley and pretending not to watch the lane for the bailiff's son. Edith tried it on her own head first, and it sat there like a cup on a fencepost. Then she tried it on the smallest finger of her left hand, and it slid over the knuckle and stopped, as though the old castle had taken her measure years before and only now sent the reckoning.
The bailiff came the next morning with two men and a paper that said everything inside the walls belonged to the Crown. Edith laughed at him and held up her hand. He reached for the ring, and the cold of it bit him through his glove, so he stepped back and went home with his paper and his sore fingers. Maud said the crown had only ever been waiting for someone who would not give it away.
Edith wears it still, and when the mill wheel stops at dusk she turns it once on her finger, the way you would turn a key in a door you mean to open again.
