Tomas, the dock gates at Kessler Ring read skin now, not cards, and the card-forgers have gone hungry since the spring shift. Everyone with a bit of coin goes to Mother Oyelaran's stall behind the hydroponics hall, where she pricks a little crown onto the middle finger with a needle she boils every morning. It is grey, not gold, and only one line thick, because the gate scanners read outlines and not colour. Her crowns are the only ones they cannot copy, she says, since nobody alive draws a line as shaky as hers.

I went last Tuesday with my ration chits and a stubborn look. She asked me to lay my hand flat on the cold steel of her counter while she worked, and talked the whole time about her grandmother who kept bees under the old sun, and about a queen who once ruled a country with no sea at all. I did not ask her to stop. The needle hummed and the crown came up slowly, a little crooked, like something remembered rather than copied.

At the gate this morning the scanner blinked green before I had lifted my hand. The guard, a boy younger than you, looked at the crown and then at me, and simply nodded me through, as if he had been waiting years for someone to bring him something that looked like the old world.
