Fine line black tattoo of a mountain range with an arrow flying across the top of a shoulder.

Mountain range and arrow on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows a jagged mountain range with an arrow passing through it from left to right, with the feathered tail at the left and the head at the right. The linework is thin and crisp, with solid black fills on the peaks and no shading or colour. The tattoo sits near the top of the shoulder, with a bra strap and a hand visible at the bottom of the frame and a window behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor came up the valley road in March, when the becks were still loud with snowmelt, and asked my father for an arrow that could fly a mile. He had a theodolite in a leather case and a boy carrying the chain. He wanted a line drawn from the chapel steps across the Skell Gap to the far shoulder of Hob Fell, so the men could bore the tunnel true from both ends. My father laughed at him. Then he went into the back room and came out with the longbow he had not strung since the war.

Nobody believed the shot would carry. The wind came off the tops in gusts that flattened the reeds on the tarn, and the boy kept muttering prayers, which my father said was bad for the draw. He loosed at dawn. The arrow climbed in a long grey curve, dipped behind the first ridge, and was lost against the sky. Only the surveyor kept his eye on the high ground. He swore afterwards that the feathers flashed white for an instant as they crossed the snow.

The boy found it three days later, driven into a cairn on the far shoulder, the shaft split but the head still bright. When the surveyor sighted down the line from the chapel steps, the cairn sat exactly on his cross hairs, and he paid for the arrow twice over without a word.

The tunnel was bored that summer. When the two crews met in the rock, they found a brass pin set at the centre of the line, and my father kept the broken shaft above the shop door, its fletching still pointing east toward the chapel steps.
