Old Harriet Pollard had kept the school bell for forty years, and when the class of 1962 came back to Mardle for their reunion, they found the bell still hung in the same damp porch, its rope worn pale where a thousand hands had pulled it.

Nobody remembered who first cut a small circle with a C inside it into the underside of the bell-frame, but everybody knew what it meant: the thing was theirs, and nobody else could say otherwise. Harriet told the children the mark kept the village's songs from wandering off to the towns. When a travelling man from Carrowby tried to sing the Mardle harvest carol at the Michaelmas fair and sell it under his own name, the tune turned sour in his mouth, and he went home hoarse and without a penny.

At the reunion the old boys argued over who had first stolen the carol, and whose grandmother had written the words. Tom Redfern, who had gone to sea and come back with a pocket full of foreign coins, reached up and ran his thumb over the mark. "It says it's ours," he said. "Then it's ours, and we'll sing it together, and no one gets it off us for a shilling."

They sang it that evening in the schoolroom with the windows fogged, every voice a little out of tune, and the words came back to them whole, as though the mark had kept them safe in the dark frame all those years.
