Once Upon a Dream script tattoo on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a textured brown-grey carpet, with the toes and ankle partly in view. The words Once Upon a Dream run along the side of the foot in a flowing, handwritten black script with thin, even linework. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the plain carpet keeps the focus on the lettering.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Imre had been a copyist for the border office for nineteen years, which meant he was paid to notice ink. When the crate of loose papers came through from the Hungarian consulate, he almost missed the single sheet tucked under a ration card: three words of looping script, the letters leaning forward as if running for a train. Once Upon a Dream, it read, and beneath it a date and nothing else.

He took it to Ilona at the window. She was counting stamps and didn't look up. 'Somebody's bedtime story,' she said. 'Put it in the lost pile.'

But the hand was too steady to be a child's. The loop of the capital O was closed with one unbroken stroke, the kind you learned from a strict aunt or a convent teacher, and the tail of the D swept beneath the line as though someone had practised it in a cold kitchen by lamplight. He spent his lunch break tracing it with a pencil on tracing paper, the way he'd been taught to check forgeries, and found he was smiling at a stranger's careful dream.

On Friday a woman came to the glass with a folder of papers and no valid visa. When Imre asked her name, she laid the sheet on the counter, face up, and said, 'He wrote it out for me before we left. He said we would have to hold on to it.' Imre stamped her file without reading the rest. Some things he was not paid to read, so he slid the sheet back across the counter and let the three words sit there between them, unclaimed by any form.
