White ink feather behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A close-up of a feather-like frond tattooed in white ink behind the ear, angled from near the top of the ear down towards the jaw. The linework is fine and delicate, with small barbs and a slightly tapering quill, and the tattoo is rendered in pale ink against the skin tone. The background is softly out of focus, and a small silver stud earring sits above the design.

Sit down, sit down, you're letting the cold in through that door like it pays rent. Right. The Lantern Rooms, the winter of fifty-two, when the pier still smelt of tar and vinegar. Everyone knew Ada Marrow could dance the quickstep backwards in her good shoes and never once look at her feet.

She came in every Saturday with her mother's brooch and a paper bag of lemon sherbets, and she sat with the band, not the girls. Her young man was a joiner named Teddy Vell who could not count to three in a waltz but built the bandstand's new rail with his own hands. He courted her across the floor with a swan's feather he'd found on the sea wall, and every Saturday he tucked it behind her ear, quick as a conjuror, and every Saturday she swatted him off like a fly.
Then in March the sea came over the wall and took the rail, and Teddy with it, off the end of the pier on the ebb. They never found him. Ada came to the Lantern Rooms the next Saturday all the same, in her good shoes, and danced with nobody at all.
At half eleven the lights dipped, the way they did for the last waltz, and a cold draught came up through the floorboards, and something brushed behind her ear. She didn't swat it. She stood very still and let the feather settle there, and the band played on, and the old men say you could see it shine for a moment, pale as frost on a window. She danced that last waltz with the air, and it's said she never once looked down.
