Small rose in an oval with stars on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a rose sits inside an oval outline on the wrist, with a few small star shapes around the bloom. The rose is drawn with bold solid black linework and dense shading, and the oval border has a small curl at its top edge. The ink is the only colour, set against pale skin and a softly blurred, orange-toned background that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Nell,

We lost the mainsail off the Azores on Tuesday, and Captain Halloran has stopped pretending the cook can make bread. You'll laugh at that. The mate has been up the mast three days running in a bosun's chair with a face like a wet Sunday, and I have spent most of my watch below sewing canvas, which is not what Father promised when he signed me on.
The stars have been the only thing that keeps me steady. Mr Pryce, who keeps the navigation book, lets me hold the sextant if I promise not to breathe on the glass. Last night he showed me how the old hands found their way by one bright point over the bow, and how you learn to trust it even when the cloud comes down and the sea goes flat as slate. I thought of the little rose Mam pressed into the lid of the biscuit tin, the one set inside its oval with the stars scattered round, and how she told us you could find your way home by any flower if you looked hard enough.
The rain came in before dawn and we all hauled sheets in the dark. When the cloud split, Venus was standing right over the stern, pale and certain, and the whole watch went quiet, even Dutch Sam, who has never once been quiet in his life.
I am keeping this letter in the tin with your last one. Tell Mam I have not forgotten the rose, and tell her the sea is bigger than I imagined but it has not lost me. Write to the post office in Lisbon. Your loving brother, Tom.
