Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lotus flower is drawn in thin black outline, with layered petals and a small heart shape at the base where the petals meet. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner forearm, with a US quarter placed below it to show scale.

Put those coppers away, the rain has knocked the price down along with the awnings, so I'll tell it for nothing. Shift your basket, Mabel, you're dripping on my lilies. Right. Listen. Behind the fish market at Saltney Quay there was a pond as black as a boot and stinking of diesel, and in the middle of it grew a lotus that nobody had planted.

Every morning the fishwife Ruth Callow leaned over the rail with her bucket and watched that flower open. It came up out of the mud clean as a christening, petal over petal, and the mud never once clung to it. She swore the root went down to where the cold is kept. The boys from the chandlery threw stones at it. The stones sank. The flower stayed exactly where it was.

Then one November the rain came sideways off the estuary for nine days, and Ruth stopped coming. The stallholders said she'd gone inland to her sister's. Nobody thought to look at the pond. On the tenth morning the lotus had closed tight, and at its base, where the petals met, sat a small hard bud shaped like a heart, green as a bottle.

Ruth came back that afternoon, soaked to the bone, and found the flower shut. She knelt on the wet boards and waited. When the sun broke through for a minute over the chandlery roof, the petals opened one at a time, slow as a clock, and there at the centre sat a seed the shape of a heart. She tucked it into her coat. That's the seed you see on my tray, the one with the heart at the bottom. Two pounds, and mind the rain on your way home.
