Small dragonfly tattoo on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small dragonfly is tattooed on the wrist, with its wings spread and body angled downward across the skin. The design is a solid dark silhouette with fine detail in the wings, and the ink appears black or dark brown. Several gold chain and beaded bracelets are stacked on the same wrist, sitting around and above the tattoo.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and hush, because the fen never gave up its stories to people who talked over them. My grandmother told me this one at a wedding much like this, under a tent that flapped like a sail, and she swore every word was true, which is what all grandmothers say and why we keep them.

There was a girl called Hester Coe who lived on the drove road past Welney, and she had a string of beads her father brought back from the Dutch traders, carved bone the colour of old teeth, and a little gold tag on a chain with no name on it, because he never got round to engraving one. She wore them every day to the eel-house. The men said she clinked like a tinker's cart.

One June the dragonflies came up off the dyke so thick the sky went glassy, and one of them, a green-black thing with wings like cut glass, settled on her wrist and would not leave. She said, "Go on, you've business elsewhere," and it sat there through the whole of supper, folding and unfolding, until the chain went warm and the tag caught the lamp.

That was the year Hester married Tom Ransome, who could not sit still, and the dragonfly, folk say, went with her for the rest of her days, lighting on every doorstep she crossed. Whether it is so, I cannot tell you. But when they buried her, the beads were still on her arm and the tag still blank, and her husband swore a dark wing lifted from the turf and was gone over the water before anyone could say a word.
