Small dragonfly tattoo on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small dragonfly is tattooed on the inner wrist, with its wings spread and body drawn in solid black ink. The tattoo sits between layers of gold chain and wooden bead bracelets, which partly frame it. The image is a close, warmly lit photograph against a plain background with the tattoo as the main focus.

Nobody in Carnmellis believed a dragonfly could carry a message, but Nell's grandmother had kept the leat below the engine house for forty years, and she said the black ones always knew the way up from the ground. So when the water came into the ninety fathom level and the cage stopped with eleven men still under it, Nell went down to the leat at first light with a crust of bread and a length of red thread.

She waited until a dragonfly came to rest on a reed, its wings held out flat as if it were drying them. She tied the thread to the smallest of its legs, not tight, and said nothing soft, because her grandmother had said soft talk only frightened them. "Joss is by the north adit," she said plainly. "Tell him the pumps are working. Tell him Mam hasn't stopped baking."
The dragonfly lifted off and went over the spoil heap, low and steady, towards the headgear, and Nell watched until it was a speck against the chimney smoke. Then she went home and set the kettle on, because there was nothing else a girl could do with her hands.
By the fourth morning the pumps had drawn the water down a fathom. There was a dragonfly on the kitchen sill when Nell came down, and a scrap of paper folded small beneath it, tied with red thread. Inside, in Joss's careless capitals, it said: HEARD THE KETTLE. BRING TWO PASTIES AND THE GOOD KNIFE.
