Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small dragonfly with a simple solid silhouette and a slender body sits on the inside of the wrist. It is rendered in dark brown or black ink with minimal detail, and the wing shapes are plain. The wrist is surrounded by layered gold chain bracelets, wooden beaded bracelets and a gold bar, set against a soft grey background.

They say the dragonfly came to Pettigrew's Travelling Show the summer the elephant was sold to a farm in Lincolnshire. Nobody had seen one so far from water. It sat on the brass rail of the calliope with its wings held flat like a folded letter, and it would not be shooed.

Mrs Pell, who kept the wardrobe and the accounts, said it was a bad sign, since dragonflies are only ever a summer's thing. Old Tobias, the ringmaster, said it was a cheap sign, the kind a man could ride. At the first show he took off his top hat and the insect rose out of it, circled the ring once, and settled on the wire where the girl Marigold was meant to walk. The crowd thought it was part of the act. Nobody paid for the seats after that.
The show went on through the autumn, on fields where farmers had stopped asking for a fee, until the canvas was more darning than tent. Each night the dragonfly kept to the highest pole. Each morning it was gone, and each evening it was back, as if it had walked the road ahead to see the way was clear.
On the last night, with eleven people in the stands and the lamps running on paraffin, Marigold climbed the wire without a net. Halfway across she stopped, because the dragonfly had dropped down and hung in the air at the height of her eyes. She held still. Then she walked on, slowly, and the wire did not sway. In the morning the tent came down pole by pole, and the last one left standing was the one the dragonfly had favoured, with the sun on it and no one left to pull it up.
