Two red elephants with a heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A single-colour red tattoo shows two elephants facing each other in profile, with their trunks curling together above a small heart shape. The linework is thin and continuous, with no shading, and the outlines are filled with no colour. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale ankle against a blurred dark background.

Juno and Pearl were the oldest things we had left that still worked. Juno had walked the ring for nineteen years and Pearl for eleven, and they had a habit I never managed to train out of them. At feeding time they reached for each other before either would touch the hay, trunk over trunk, curling and holding until one of them sighed and let go. I told the lads it was bad manners. Really I liked watching it.
In March a man from a sanctuary in Kent came up the lane in a clean white lorry with a clipboard and a soft voice. Dunstan signed where he was pointed. I asked for one morning before the ramp went down, and he gave it to me the way you give things to a child, not quite believing it would be used. I took the red chalk from the ring box and knelt on the concrete by the loading bay.
I drew them facing each other, the way I had seen them every morning, trunks meeting in a loop above a small heart. When the lorry rolled out the rain had started, and I stood watching the lines soften on the wet concrete. The heart held on longest.
