Small elephant on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant in a single-line outline sits along the side of a finger, facing left with its trunk lowered. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is dark grey-black against pale skin. The tattoo is centred on the finger, with the rest of the hand and a second finger softly out of focus on a near-black background.

Dear Ada, forgive the smudges on this paper. We are three days out from Lisbon and the galley copper has not stopped steaming since Tuesday, so I am writing with flour on my fingers and a pencil stub I borrowed from the bosun. Mr Okonedo, who keeps the stores, found something in the bottom of the sugar tin this morning and would not tell anyone where it came from.

It was a pewter elephant no longer than my smallest finger, its trunk dropped low as if it were sniffing the deck for crumbs. Someone had scratched a tiny line along its flank with a nail. Okonedo set it on the chopping board between us and we both pretended not to look at it for the length of a whole pot of tea.

Here is the odd part. Young Pell, the purser's boy, swore on his mother that he had won it off a dockside stall in Mombasa and lost it at cards to a man from Glasgow, who in turn lost it to me, though I have no memory of playing cards with anyone since Christmas. Nobody aboard owns an elephant, and nobody will own up to bringing one aboard.

I put it back in the sugar tin this evening, facing the stern where the wake runs back to England. I do not think it wants to go anywhere else. Keep the kettle on for me when I'm home.
