Small elephant outline on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant drawn in a single black outline, facing left with its trunk curled up, sits on the middle section of a finger. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the pale skin stands out against a plain red background. A cropped blue tattoo edge appears at the bottom left of the frame but is not readable.

Sit down before that kettle boils over, love, and I'll tell you about the elephant that lived in the linen cupboard on Ward Nine. Ivy Haskett bought it off a stall on Margate pier in nineteen fifty-two, a wee carved thing no longer than a bus ticket, with its trunk curled up over its head as if it were waving at somebody who'd just missed the bus. Her husband Fred said it meant the elephant was keeping the bad weather at arm's length. Ivy didn't argue. She carried it in her coat pocket through two winters and a rotten chest infection, and she rubbed its back with her thumb whenever the nurses lied to her about her blood results.

The night the lights went out on Nine, the whole corridor went black as a coal hole. Trolleys knocked into each other, a cleaner swore in Polish, and somebody's buzzer kept going off like a fire alarm in a biscuit tin. Ivy, who was ninety-one and could barely lift a cup, got herself up on one elbow and held the elephant out flat in her palm. Her granddaughter swears the trunk was pointing at the door to the stairwell. The porter on that shift, a lad called Terry Muldoon who'd never believed a word of it, followed where it pointed, found the fuse box behind a fire extinguisher, and had the ward humming again inside five minutes.
Ivy died in the spring, peaceful, with the elephant still in her cardigan pocket. Her granddaughter took it home, and it's been in the pocket of every night coat she's owned since. She works the same shift Ivy did, and that's why I'm telling you. When the power dips, you'll see her turn her hand over and feel for that little curled trunk, and then she'll walk straight to wherever the trouble is.
