Small elephant outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small cartoon elephant is drawn in thin black outline on the side of an ankle, facing left with its trunk raised. The linework is simple and even, with no shading and no added colour. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a plain skin background, with a blue sandal strap and a floral curtain behind.

Nobody in Marrowmere believed the wooden elephant was alive until it raised its trunk at the tax collector. Osric Plum had not smiled in nine years, and when the little creature lifted its curled nose at him across the market square, he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the fishmonger's step. My grandmother Ilse had carved the elephant from driftwood pulled out of a wrecked ship off Cold Harbour. She said the wood had asked to be something gentle, and she was not a woman who lied about wood.

The king heard of it by supper. He sent guards to our harbour house, and they carried the elephant up the hill on a velvet cushion while I trailed behind with the bread, because somebody had to. In the throne room the king stared at it with his jaw working. Then he asked, in a voice like a dropped spoon, whether it could tell him what his dead queen had wanted to say. The elephant turned its head toward the high windows, lifted its trunk at the sea, and said nothing at all.
The king ordered it melted into candles before dawn. My cousin Pim, who was nine and fearless, swapped it in the palace kitchen for a wooden spoon while the cook wept over onions, and the spoon went into the furnace with great ceremony. I carried the real elephant home under my coat, past guards too busy with their own suppers to look.
It sits on our windowsill now, facing left toward the harbour with its trunk raised. Each evening the fishing boats come in one by one, and each evening Osric Plum stops on the quay, lifts his hat, and holds it as high as his arm will reach.
