Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant facing left is drawn in a single black outline with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits on the side of the ankle and foot, with the rest of the skin in soft focus. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with a pinkish surface behind the foot.

Mind the third step, it's loose, and don't touch the brass, the keeper's wife polished it for a fortnight. Now. You'll want to hear about the elephant that walked out of the fog on Skerrin Rock, because my grandfather saw it with his own two eyes, and he never once lied to a child, only to the minister.

It came in the March of the great drift, when the sea had frozen grey at the edges and the gulls stopped crying. Grandfather was alone on the rock, the relief boat lost somewhere in the murk. Out of the white came a small beast, no bigger than a sheepdog, its ears flat, its trunk curled up like a question mark. It faced west, toward the mainland, and it would not look at him. It only walked, one careful step after another along the high-water line, and every print it left filled with seawater as soon as it was made.

He lit the lamp that night as he always did, and when the beam swept round, the elephant was standing in the light, perfectly still, drawn in one black line like a thing sketched on the air. He said he could see straight through its belly to the fog. Each time the beam came round it had turned its head a little further, until at dawn it was gone, and the only mark it left was a single thin line on the wet rock where it had stood.

The relief boat came at noon. Grandfather told the new keeper, who laughed, and the old one, who didn't. Walk the coast road now and you'll still hear folk say an elephant on the rock means the fog will lift. Here's the thing I never told your mother: it was facing the way home. Go on, the lamp needs trimming, and mind that step.
