Small elephant outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant is drawn in a single black outline with a raised trunk and no shading. The linework is thin and even, and the design sits on the side of the ankle against bare skin. A black sock and a black trainer appear below it, so the tattoo is the only colour detail in the frame.

The boats came back to Skerrow Haven on the flood tide, all but the Mary Ann, and Tomas Keel stood on the quay counting heads until the gulls gave up circling. His grandmother had always said the sea kept what it was owed. Tomas had never believed her, but he believed the bay now, grey as pewter and flat as a plate, the way it looked before it swallowed something.

The old men said the harbour wall held a beast. Carved from driftwood by a sailor who came home from the hot countries with no ship and no wife, it was an elephant no longer than a loaf, its trunk raised as if to test the wind. Nobody had ever scrubbed it clean. Every boat that left Skerrow Haven touched that trunk for luck, and every boat that came home found its bow turned by the same hand. Tomas touched it that night and went out alone in his father's coble, a lamp swinging from the mast.

The fog came down so thick he could not see his own oars. Then a grey shape stood on the water ahead, broad as a barn, and a small light flickered at the end of a long raised trunk. Tomas rowed after it for what felt like an hour, until the light dipped and he saw the Mary Ann's hull upturned on the rocks at Cole Point, three men lashed to it with fishing line and singing hymns to keep warm.

They lived. The fog lifted at dawn and the grey shape was gone, and when Tomas climbed the wall with the men's thanks still in his ears, the carving was only wood again, its trunk pointing straight out to sea. He hung his lamp on the tip of it, and it was still burning when the next boats came in.
