So the groom's old nurse, a woman called Mother Tibbs with a voice like a rusted gate, took the matter in hand. She borrowed a grey elephant from the travelling fair, a patient beast named Duchess who had carried the strongman's cannon for twenty winters, and she loaded it with lilies, ribbons, and one small painted heart cut from tin. The elephant stopped, lowered her great head, and with her trunk she set the tin heart on the bank at Agnes's feet, then curled the trunk round it like a question mark. Agnes laughed, which surprised everyone, and said yes before the beast had even turned for home. That was the whole of the courting, and the whole of the marriage was little more than that moment, kept.
