Fine line cat outline on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms a stretching cat with an arched tail, shown small on the inner forearm in the top panel and enlarged in the lower panel. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the composition places the cat in the centre of the forearm against soft, pale skin. The image is a two-panel photo with the background softly blurred in both views.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came aboard at Valparaiso, or so the cook swore, though nobody had seen her climb the gangway. She was grey as wet slate and had a tail that curled up over her back like a question nobody on the Maud Eliza wanted to answer. We called her Stretch, because that was what she did with every hour of the watch: rose from the coil of rope by the galley door, lengthened herself until her spine looked like a fishing line, then lifted that long tail high before padding off to see what the bosun had left unlocked.

Rounding the Horn in March, the decks iced over and the cook's fingers went numb on the knife. Stretch slept in the lee of the boiler, and nobody moved her. When the fore topmast cracked in the third week, she was the one who sat on the forecastle head and yowled at the sky until Jem Parrish, who had sworn he would never go aloft again, lifted his head and saw the wind had backed round. He went up anyway, and came down alive, and never again called her a bad-luck animal.

We paid off at Falmouth with the holds empty and our pockets emptier. I walked the quay with my sea bag on my shoulder and felt the ground heave under me the way it does for a week after a long passage. Behind me I heard the scrape of claws on a bollard. Stretch had come ashore after all, and she sat on the stones with her tail up, watching me go, as if she had known all along which of us would be the one to leave.
