Dear Dad, the elephant came out of the tin at the back of the dresser, the one with the broken Christmas stamps. Mam says it was your mother's, a brass thing with one ear rubbed smooth, but I found it under the clock and it still had its trunk. I took it to school for show and tell and Mr Pritchard held it up to the window and said it was the best thing anyone had brought in since Owen's fossil.

Mrs Dunn at the chapel hall says the lamp dance is Saturday and the men are to be home by six, not seven like last time. Gwen's dad drew the whole shift rota on the back of a feed sack for her, with a little picture for each man. Yours has a cap on, because you always come up wearing one, even in July. I couldn't draw you a cap, so I drew you an elephant instead.

It's one line, the way you showed me with the fuse wire on the allotment fence. Don't lift the pen. Start at the back legs, go round the belly and up over the back, and the trunk is the hard bit, so think about the trunk. You can't rush a trunk. I did it four times on the margin of my spelling book before it stopped looking like a dog that had swallowed a coat hanger.

I went over the last bit twice so it's dark enough for you to see from the bottom of the stairs. If you're tired when you come up, look for it on the kitchen table, next to the tea. It's the only animal in the house that has never once been down a pit, and I think it would like to keep it that way. Love, Bethan.
