A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told the tank at Cold Spring was dry since March, so when the blue van pulled in at dusk with its lights already off, she walked out to the pump with a torch in one hand and a tin of paint in the other. The sign above the stop had lost its letters years ago. Only the eye remained, painted on the concrete post by her grandmother: a red outline, a green ring, a blue centre that the sun had bleached to the colour of old denim.

The driver was a boy with sunburnt ears who wanted water and nothing else. He didn't ask about the eye. He asked how far to the next town, and she told him ninety miles, that the road bent twice before the salt flats, and that he should keep the eye on his left until he saw the second bend. "Why left?" he asked. "Because that's where it's looking," she said. She meant it as a joke, but he nodded as though she had given him directions to heaven.

She filled his jerry can from the drum behind the shed. Her grandmother used to say the eye was for the road, not the people on it. Anyone who drove that stretch alone at night would start to drift toward the sand, and the painted eye was there to keep them honest. Nell had never believed a word of it until the boy's van rattled off into the dark with its lights still dead.

Three weeks later a postcard came with a photograph of a new post at a crossroads three hundred miles north. Someone had painted an eye on it, red and green and blue, and beneath it, smaller, had written in careful capitals: IT WORKED. Nell pinned the card above the till and went out to check the paint on the post, which was already beginning to fade.
