Two giraffes on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an adult giraffe with its head bent down beside a smaller young giraffe, both with detailed patterned markings. The linework is soft and the shading gives the faces and necks a rounded, three-dimensional look. Warm orange, tan and brown tones dominate against the skin, and the design curves diagonally across the outer thigh.

Hush now, and Gwen, put that glass down before you topple the cake. I am going to tell you about Ada the giraffe, who stood taller than any man at this wedding and was the only one who never once looked down on anyone. Her calf, Thandi, was all knees and worry, and on the morning the rains came late she wandered off after a bright green beetle and got herself stuck in the thorn by the well.

Ada did not run for the water or the shade. She folded her long neck down the way a washing line sags after a wet week, slow and certain, until her face was level with the calf's. Then she breathed on her, just once, and Thandi stopped crying. The herders watching from the ridge said it was the kindest thing they had ever seen a creature do with a neck that long, and they argued about it for a month, because nobody could agree how something so tall could be so careful.

Here is the part I want you to remember, because weddings are full of people rushing to be the tallest in the room. The thorn was not cut free by strength. It was lifted, a little at a time, by two heads leaning together until the branch gave way. Ada did not hold herself above her child. She bent to meet her.

So lift your glasses to the couple, and may they bend when it counts. Now, who has the second bottle? Don't tell me it is in the car.
