Black feather on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is tattooed diagonally across the inner forearm, with its quill running from upper left to lower right. The barbs are drawn with fine, individual strokes and soft shading that gives the feather depth and a three-dimensional look. The design is entirely in black ink on pale skin, set against a plain light background that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off Hollin Gap had teeth that February, and Mrs Ardagh's letter had sat in my coat for three days before I thought to look at it properly. I was twelve, carrying the post up from Garth Bridge because my uncle's knee had gone and nobody else in the valley would walk the pass in that weather.

Halfway up, where the path bends round the black boulder everyone calls the Parson, a crow lay dead in the snow. One flight feather had worked loose and lifted against the rock, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice. I pulled it free. The vane was split along one side, and the barbs were fine as the hairs on a moth's wing, dark as wet slate until I tilted it to the light and the grey underneath caught the sun in threads.

I carried it the rest of the way inside my glove. At the top, the letter went to a farmhouse with a shut door and a woman who read it standing up, then sat down heavily on the step. She asked who had sent it, and I said I didn't know, which was true. She gave me a shilling and a biscuit tin of cold tea, and she didn't cry until I was already on the track.

Coming down, I pushed the feather into the cairn at the summit, quill first, the way my uncle taught me to mark a safe line. By morning the wind had taken it, or someone had. I laid my boots in the old prints on the way home, and for once the weather was behind me.
