Small fish outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined fish sits on the inner wrist near the base of the palm, drawn as a single simple line with no shading. The ink appears pale and light against the skin, so the design reads as a delicate, minimal mark. A steel watch strap sits below it and fills the lower part of the frame.

At Harrow Bridge halt there was a clerk called Tobias Vane who sold tickets from a hatch no bigger than a hymn book. Every morning the 6.12 stopped for forty seconds to let off the milk churns, and every morning a girl stood on the far platform with a basket of smoked herring for the signalman's wife. Nobody ever asked her name. The clerk knew it anyway, because she wrote it in the damp on the waiting room window with one finger, and by noon the rain had taken it.

One wet March the line flooded below the cutting and the trains stopped. The water rose into the goods yard and the eels came up through the drains, and the stationmaster said the company would pay nothing for a ditch full of fish. Tobias went down with a lantern and a bucket. He found the girl already there, up to her knees, lifting carp out of the culvert and laying them on the sleepers.

She told him, plainly, that the river had always come up this way when a line was laid across its path, and that someone had to count the fish that went over. He counted. There were three hundred and eleven. When he looked up she had gone, the water had fallen back into its bed, and on the wet timber of the platform someone had drawn a small fish with a single line, the way a child draws one.

Tobias kept the hatch open for thirty more years. When they pulled the halt down, the sleeper with the fish on it went into the signal box stove, and the smoke smelled of the river.
