Small geometric rose on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small rose made of angular, overlapping petals sits on the back of a hand near the base of the thumb. It is drawn in thin black outline with a little dark shading at the centre, and there is no colour. The pale wall behind the hand leaves plenty of clean space around the tattoo, which is the clear focus of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You sell the last of the paper roses on the Sunday, when the rain has finally stopped and the field smells of diesel and burnt sugar. Uncle Teddy taught you the fold on the back of a betting slip the summer you turned nine: one square, six creases, petals tucked at angles that ought not to hold together but do. He called it the geometric rose, and the farmhands laughed at him for using a word like that on a bit of paper. You never minded the laughing. You only minded when the roses went soft in the damp.

By dusk the stalls are shuttering, and Lionel Pask, who runs the hook-a-duck with a cigarette he never lights, leans on your trestle and offers a stuffed bear for the lot. You tell him the roses are not for sale. They are for the bottom of the Big Wheel, where Teddy used to sit in the last car until the lamps went out one by one so he could watch the whole field go dark.

Pask shrugs and buys one anyway, then asks how it's done. You show him: the squares, the creases, the dab of biro in the centre to darken the heart the way Teddy liked. He fumbles the third petal and swears, and you laugh, and for a minute the generator drowns out everything else.

When the lorries pull out at dawn, you find your rose tucked into the gate of the empty Big Wheel, its ink heart turned towards the road. You fold another the next morning, sharp and exact, and leave it on the ghost train wall for whoever comes after you.
