Your mother says you have been sleeping in the hayloft again, which I am choosing to believe is because the farmhouse radiators have finally given up and not because you are plotting something. The frost came down hard on Tuesday. When I went out at six to break the ice on the trough, there were two prints across the yard that were not mine or the dog's, small and deep, running from the back gate straight to the barn door and then back out again with the mud still wet on them.

I stood there with the bucket and wondered who would be daft enough to cross the whole field before breakfast. Then I saw the feed sack had been opened and the old tabby had the look of a schoolboy caught at the biscuit tin. I counted the steps, twenty-two of them, and every one was a neat little pair, toes turned to the hedge as if the walker had been listening for someone.

Here is my offer, since you asked so nicely at Christmas to have a say in the spring lambing. Come up on Saturday, bring the good torch, and we will follow those prints together to wherever they end. Mind your boots. The pond is not as thick as it looks, and your gran never forgave me for the January I went through it up to my knees.
