Matching heart and stroke tattoos on two wrists
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a matching bold black tattoo of a heart with three short vertical strokes above it and a small curved dash beside it. The linework is solid and even, with no visible shading, and the ink reads as a simple outline-style design. The photo is in greyscale and the arms fill the frame against a blurred background.

Nell had not expected the gym to smell of the same floor polish after twenty-two years. The reunion committee had hung paper bunting from the basketball hoops, and someone had printed name badges with photographs that made everyone look like hostages. She found Marcus by the squash-ball table, exactly where he had always stood during assembly, one hand half-raised the way they had taught each other in Year Nine: three quick flicks for 'wait' and a curl for 'come here'.

They had invented it in the back of Mr Pryor's chemistry lab, when the teacher split them up and neither could say a word without the whole class turning round. Nothing clever, just a private alphabet of small shapes: a heart drawn in the air, a dash for 'later', a stroke for each thing they were not allowed to say aloud. Nell had kept the lot in a green exercise book until her mum threw it out during a move to Leeds.
'You still do the thing,' Marcus said, and she realised she had been drawing the heart on the rim of her plastic cup with her thumbnail. He asked whether she remembered what the dash meant. She did. It had been their word for the bus home, for the bench behind the sports hall, for the last time Mr Pryor caught them grinning and gave them both detention. 'Later,' she said, and this time neither of them pretended it was a joke.
Outside, the car park lights came on one bank at a time. They walked out into the cold together, two grown people with a private sign and a bus timetable neither had checked in years, and Nell made the shape once more before she got in her car: the heart, the strokes, the dash. Through the windscreen she watched him make it back.
