Small heart and chevron tattoos on a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised against a plain white wall, palm partly turned to the camera. Two small black tattoos sit on the hand: a tiny outlined heart near the base of the middle finger and a pair of chevron or arrow-like marks on the side of the adjacent finger. The lines are thin and the ink appears grey-black, with no shading or colour, and the shot is evenly lit with the subject centred.

The fog came in off the bay on the Tuesday, and by teatime the lodgers at Gull Rock House could not find their own doors. Mrs Pryce kept a tin of black paint in the cupboard under the stairs for the skirting boards, and she went along the top landing on her knees, painting small chevrons that pointed the way down to the dining room. She did not hurry. She had kept the house for thirty years and fog was only weather.

Her grandson Albie, who was nine and believed himself useful, followed her with a stub of pencil. At the door of room four, where the widow Hannah Lusk had taken the same bed every March since her husband drowned, he drew a heart no bigger than a thumbnail. Nobody had asked him to. Mrs Pryce saw it and said nothing, because the heart was true and the arrows were only directions.
The fog stayed three days. Hannah found her way to breakfast each morning by following the chevrons with one hand on the wall, and on the last morning she brought the boy a paper bag of barley sugar and told him that a house can be lost in weather but never in its marks. Then the wind swung round, the sea came back blue and rude against the rocks, and the lodgers went out in their coats to see it.
The house was sold in the nineties and the new owners painted everything cream. But if you stand on that landing at dusk, when the light comes in low across the boards, a faint grey arrow still shows through the paint, and beside room four, a heart the size of a thumbnail, pointing the way down.
