Small heart and cross tattoo on a toe
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot in a flip-flop, showing a small black tattoo on the side of the middle toe. The tattoo is a thin outlined cross-like motif with a heart shape at its centre, with short lines extending above and below. The colour is black on the skin, and the soft vignette and pale background keep the focus on the toe.

In the high village of Ardeth, people knew the pass by its markers. Every autumn, before the first snow, the oldest woman in the valley, Mair Dunn, walked the track to Scarrow Gap with a bucket of lime and a flat brush. On each boulder above sound footing she painted a cross, and inside the cross a small heart, so that a traveller would know the ground beneath was safe.

Her grandson Tomas thought the work foolish. The boulders did not move, he said, and the snow could not read. He carried the lime up with her for three autumns and complained the whole way. In the fourth autumn a mule trader came up from the lowlands with six animals and a bad temper. He laughed at the painted stones and took the shortcut over the scree instead.
The snow came early that year. Tomas found the trader's mule standing alone at the top of the gap, its legs caught in drift, and the trader sitting on a rock nearby with his face grey and his hands in his lap. The man had stopped at the last marker before the drop. It had a heart painted in its cross, and he had remembered the old woman's rule: stop where the heart is, and wait for the light.
Mair died the winter after. Tomas kept the lime tin on the hook by the door and walked the track every autumn with the brush. When the trader came back through with his mules he never asked about the paint. He simply lifted his hat at each cross he passed.
