A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ring had been Mam's, and it slid off every finger it was offered until Nell tried the smallest toe on her left foot, where it stopped at the knuckle as if it had been waiting. Her father watched from the back step with his boots still on, grey dust in the creases of his face. He had come up from Wheal Tamsin at four that morning, the cage rattling slower than usual, and he had said nothing about the lamp that failed on the four-hundred level. He only asked for the good scissors and a clean cloth, and Nell understood she was meant to make something of the day.

Her brother Davy had a sewing needle bound with black thread and a saucer of soot mixed with vinegar from the chapel fête. Nell rested her foot on a folded towel and watched him press the needle into the side of the second toe, one small stab after another, the way he pricked out the patterns on the church linen. It took three evenings. The outline came first, a fat, uneven heart no bigger than a barley grain, and then the inside, which Davy shaded with the blue from the laundry bag so the colour sat cool and grey, like river stones under a film of water.

When it was finished her father turned her foot toward the lamp and tapped the ring with one blackened nail. He did not call it foolish. He said the mine had taken enough men's hearts already and it could not have the last word on what Nell wore on her feet. Then he went up to bed, and in the morning the ring was still there, turning a little each time she moved, the heart beneath it keeping its small steady place.
