Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with fingers held up shows a small black outline heart tattooed on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The background is blurred and dark, keeping the focus on the tattoo and the hand.

The fair pulled out of Harrowgate on a Tuesday, all but the coconut shy, which Mother Oda would not let go until the last nail was paid for. Nell Fairweather sat on the shy's wooden step with a steel nib and a pot of Indian ink, waiting for the baker's boy, who had sworn on his mother's loaf that he would come back before the lorries were loaded.

He came at dusk, breathless, holding out his hand the way a man offers a coin. Nell did not look at his face. She drew a small heart on the side of his middle finger, one line that closed where it began, and left the inside white. Oda had taught her that a heart drawn full is a thing that gets spent, but an outline keeps its room. "Fill it when you have something to put in it," she said. "Not before."

The boy laughed and asked what he owed. Nell told him a penny and a promise never to try the rigged iron ring again. He paid in coppers, then walked off down the lane with his hand held against his chest, as if the rain might wash the ink away.

Years later the fair came back to the same field. The shy was still standing, its nails rusted and its paint gone grey, and a woman with flour on her cuffs stopped at the step and held out her hand. Nell saw the little outline, still empty, and without a word she reached for the pot.
