The wire ran from Ashby Colliery down through the valley villages to our little office above Hobb's the chemist, where the only other sound was Mr Pryce's kettle on the gas ring. Dot, dot, dot is S. It is the easiest letter to send and the hardest to misread, which is why the men at the pit had agreed on it years back for one purpose only. Three shorts meant the cage was up and everyone was out. Nobody had sent it since the spring of 1947, and nobody had thought to take it off the list.
I carried the flimsy down the hill in the rain, past the chapel where the bell had started, and Mrs Ellery was already at her gate with her apron still on. She read it twice. She didn't ask me to say it aloud. She folded it small and put it in her pocket, the way you'd keep a ticket for a train you had been told had already gone.
On the walk back I tapped it out on the wet railings, dot, dot, dot, and nobody answered, which was the best answer there was.
