Sit down, sit down, you're letting the cold in. No, the desert isn't cold, that's only the nights, and you'll learn that by morning. Listen. Out past the dry lake there's a road no map has ever kept. We call it the Dotted Road, because my great-grandfather painted a black dot on every fence post, one for each mile, and three together wherever there was water.

A railway surveyor came through in the wet year, sure he knew better. He laughed at the dots and took the straight line across the flats to save himself a day. He thought three dots meant three wells. They meant three graves, which is something you only learn when you've dug one of them yourself.

Fine, I'll finish. He got three miles out and the sky went white, and the wind took the track clean off the ground. He stopped the car and sat with his finger tapping the dashboard, counting, the way a child counts the spots on a ladybird. One tap, one mile. Tap, tap, tap, and then a small hard silence where the next post should have been. He followed the count back the way he'd come, post to post, until a windmill stood up out of the haze like a full stop at the end of a sentence.
