Small heart outline on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple heart outline sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The skin tone is warm and the photograph is cropped to the chest, shoulder and a hand holding a clear crystal point, with a multicoloured crocheted top in the foreground.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because this is the bit where Mab Otterly lost her spectacles in the bracken. No, sit still. She had been climbing Harrow Wood every dusk for a week, with a ball of bright wool under one arm and a clear stone in her fist, looking for the spring the old men said ran uphill.

The stone was no bigger than a thumb and sharp at one end, and it hummed when you held it near running water. Her sister had pressed it into her palm the winter the ice came off the Scarp. Keep it warm, Mab, she'd said, it only works for a warm hand. So Mab kept it warm. She carried it in her apron pocket and under her tongue on cold mornings, and when she sat on the stile to crochet a strip of pink and green for the miller's new baby, she worked around it like a second needle.
She found the spring on the eighth night, behind a fallen oak, where the moss was the colour of old pennies. It was only a dribble over a flat grey stone, but someone had scratched a heart into the stone, and the lines had filled with black lichen so neatly you'd swear a child had drawn it with a pen. Mab knelt, took off her mitten, and traced the heart with her warm thumb. The water rose up through the outline and ran back down the hill, and the stone in her other hand went quiet as a sleeping cat.
That is why, when the miller's wife wants the baby to sleep, the village still ties a strip of rainbow wool to the gate of Harrow Wood. And the spring still runs uphill, if you are willing to walk up to it with something warm in your hand. Now, who wants the next one, and who will carry the lantern?
