The tent came down for the last time on a Tuesday, and nobody bothered to count the empty seats. Mercy Dunn had the mare saddled before the rain started, walking her in slow rounds across the wet grass while the lads argued over the generator and a dropped tent peg.

Her father had taught her the eight on the sawdust when she was six: two loops joined at a single crossing point in the middle, where the horse had to lean and the rider had to forget which loop she had started on. 'It never ends,' he told her, 'it just comes round to where it began.' She had thought it was a trick of arithmetic then, something for the ringmaster's ledger.

The bank manager came on Thursday in a grey car and stood at the ring's edge with his hands pushed into his coat. Mercy didn't stop. She rode the eight past him once, then again, the mare's breath steaming in the cold, and at the crossing point she felt the old pull of the sawdust under her, the same spot it had always been.

When she finally walked the mare out through the gap in the canvas, the field was empty except for the tracks. Four hoofprints overlapped in the mud, looping back on themselves until nobody could say which way the horse had gone. She stood over them a while, then turned the animal round and started again.
