Small infinity symbol on the nape of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small infinity symbol is tattooed on the back of the neck, with the head turned away from the camera so no face is visible. The thin, even black linework is simple and sits centred just below the hairline. The white top with a silver-trimmed collar and a keyhole back fastening contrasts with the pale skin, and the blurred window background is soft.

The snow had shut the Hollin Pass road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the only traffic at the Crook and Lantern was the wind leaning on the shutters. Mrs Aske kept the register behind the bar and I kept the coal. Nobody in the valley travelled in February unless they had to, so when the stranger came in with a dog and a fiddle case, I gave him the room above the boiler and didn't ask where he'd come from.

He drew on the back of the menu all evening, a figure eight lying on its side, over and over, the pencil never lifting. I asked what it was. He said it was the shape a loop makes when you can't find where it starts. Mrs Aske said it was a sum for the mathematically unwell. He laughed and turned the menu over, then drew it on the frosted glass with his thumb until the steam came back and rubbed it out.
On the third night the fiddle went quiet and the boiler knocked twice, and I found him at the window with his coat already on. He told me the road would open at six, that it always did, and that the trick was to keep walking the same stretch of ground until the ground remembered you. I told him that was nonsense and poured him a whisky he didn't touch.
At six the plough came grinding up from Settle. The room above the boiler was empty, the bed made tight, and on the glass, faint as breath, the figure eight was back, one unbroken line I had not seen him draw. I wiped at it with my sleeve and left the rest for the first wagon to see.
