Small ladybird tattoo on skin

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small ladybird is shown on skin, with a round body split into orange and red halves and black dots. The bold black outlines and legs are simple and even, and the dots add contrast against the warm colours. The design sits centrally in the frame against a plain, pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Alder had kept the kitchen garden at Saint Brannoc's for thirty winters, and in all that time he had never once struck a beetle with his thumb. The other brothers said it made him slow. The cabbages said otherwise, for by midsummer the aphids had gone grey on every leaf, and the abbot, who was a practical man, sent word that the kale would be pulled up if it was not saved by Lammas.

Alder went out at dusk with a lantern and a bowl of soapy water and found only a single beetle sitting on the rim of a leek, its black dots catching the light like spilt ink. He meant to flick it into the bowl. Instead it opened its stiff, bright wings and flew to the wall, where it walked patiently up and down the stones until he followed it to the far corner of the herb bed.

There, under a yarrow plant nobody had tended since the old prior died, were hundreds of tiny yellow eggs and a crowd of grubs already feeding. The beetle had not come for the kale. It had come because somebody had left the yarrow alone long enough for something to matter.

By morning the abbot found Alder asleep on a sack of turnips, and every cabbage in the garden was clean. The abbot asked how it had been done. Alder pointed at the wall, where a dozen ladybirds sat in a neat row, each one half red and half gold, as if they had been cut from the same coin and shared out between them. The abbot did not ask again, and the kale was not pulled.
