Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest against a dark surface, with the ankle of one foot turned toward the camera. A small leaf with shaded veins sits on the ankle in black ink. The monochrome photograph keeps the focus on the tattoo and the soft shading of the feet.

The autumn the line was due to close, a young porter named Tomas Yardley found a leaf lying on the sleepers. It was shaped like an open hand, and its veins were drawn in dark strokes, as if someone had gone over them with a fine pen. He pocketed it for luck. That night the signal lamp guttered, and he dreamt of walking the tracks towards a town he had never seen, the leaf held in his palm the whole way.

He woke at the level crossing with wet boots and an empty coat pocket. Mrs Pell only nodded at the sycamore, where a single bare twig now hung above the fence. "It went home," she said, and pressed a ticket into his hand for a station that had not existed for thirty years.

He boarded the last train of the evening, and at the far end of the line he stepped down onto a platform overgrown with young sycamores, each one leaning slightly toward the rails. He stood a while in the cold, then knelt and pressed a fresh leaf into the soft earth beside the track. The train rolled away without him, and when he looked back the old tree at Harrow Bridge was already losing its last green.
