Small lemon tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a yellow lemon with a green leaf and stem sits on the inner wrist of a raised hand. The lemon has simple, light outlines with soft yellow and green fills, and the design is kept small and uncluttered. The background is a white wall with loose red and green line-drawn flowers, and a patterned watch strap is visible on the forearm.

The lemon on the cracked tub behind the pumps was the only yellow thing for sixty miles, and Bet Harlow had been counting it for three days before she dared pick it. Her late husband had grown the tree from a pip saved in a café sugar bowl, and he had sworn it would fruit if you talked to it in the mornings, so she talked to it, though mostly she talked about the price of diesel.

A lorry driver stopped on Thursday, a long man with a sunburnt neck, and watched her fill a jug from the cistern. "You've got lemons out here," he said, as though she had been hiding them. She told him the tree did the work and she only stood about watching. He laughed, bought two bottles of water, and took away a paper bag with the three fruit she was willing to spare.
By the weekend the road had dissolved into shimmer and no lorries came at all. Bet sat on the step with her knees up, reading the seed packet again, though she knew it by heart. Then a girl walked in off the highway with split boots and asked for a tyre patch. Bet gave her the patch and a lemon. The girl bit into it like an apple, her face crumpled, and she laughed until she had to sit down on the kerb.
In the morning the second fruit had turned from green to yellow overnight, its leaf still holding the stem like a small fist. Bet picked it before the sun cleared the pumps and set it on the sill beside the other rind, drying in the wind, and she said good morning to the tree first.
