Matching triangle finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are placed palm down side by side against green grass, each with a small, simple black outline triangle on the side of the ring finger. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the triangles sit at a similar size and position on each hand. The image is in natural daylight with a plain colour palette of skin tones, green grass and black ink.

The Nile had taken the boundary stones again, so Senet and I were sent out with the knotted cord before the water had even drained from the lower fields. The clerk at the granary said a field was only as large as the last man willing to swear to it, and nobody in Thebes was willing to swear to anything that spring.

Senet had taught me the stretch the way his father had taught him: twelve knots spaced evenly along a length of flax, pulled taut into three, four and five. Make the corner true and the field is true, he said, and a true field cannot be argued with. He never explained where the rule came from, and I never asked, because his hands were always moving, pegging and measuring, and his tongue was never still for long.
On the evening we finished the widow Tiye's plot, he sat on the bank with a cup of sour beer and a lump of soot ground into resin. 'A surveyor carries his instrument,' he said, and pricked a small outline triangle into the side of his ring finger with a sharpened reed. I did the same, badly at first and then properly, and he checked mine with his thumb the way a potter checks a rim. We wiped the marks on our kilts and laughed, and the frogs went quiet to listen.
The next flood took him. The clerk brought the cord back to me, still knotted, and I stretched it across the new bank alone. At each corner I touch the ink on my finger to the knot that was his, and the triangle holds.
