A small solid black camel silhouette sits on the top of a big toe, standing side on with its head raised to the left. Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the wasps on the windfalls. No, the camel didn't come by road. Old Harriet Pask swore it walked up from the Medway with a bell round its neck and a bundle of rope on its back, and I have never once known her to lie about anything but her age.

It was the last week of August, the year the Cox trees bent so low you could pick from the grass. The camel stood at the gate of Ashdown orchard with its head held high, looking over the hedge at the far field as though it had been promised something there. Nobody owned it. It ate nothing but the lowest apples, and it would not be led, only followed, and only by children who had nothing in their pockets.

Here is the bit they leave out in the village. On the ninth morning the camel knelt in the long grass between the rows, folded its legs under like a clerk at a desk, and let the youngest Pask girl climb up and sit on its hump. She rode it to the crest of the orchard where the old wall runs out, and from there she could see the sea, which none of us had ever seen from that field. She came down with her hands full of plums and no bell, and the camel was gone, and the bell was hanging on the gate post, polished bright as a new coin.

So if you walk up the lane this September and the wind is right, listen for a bell that isn't there. It means the camel has gone looking for its sea again, and it will be back when the windfalls are done.
