The fair came into the market town on the third Tuesday of the month, and the camel came with it, though nobody could say who had first seen it step down from the back of the wagon. The showman's boy, Tobiah, was given the job of leading it to water each evening down by the mill race. The camel would not be led. It went where it wished, which was always facing the same way, west toward the hills where the road gave out, and each time the boy pulled the rope it stood still until he gave up and walked along beside it.

On the last night before the fair packed up, the camel stopped at the edge of the water and would not drink. Tobiah waited with it. The sky went the colour of an old bruise, and the mill wheel stopped turning. Then the camel lifted its head, turned its long neck and looked at him, and he understood that it wanted nothing from him at all. It had only been waiting for someone to notice which way it faced.

He untied the rope. The camel climbed the hill toward the hedgerows, and the boy did not follow. The fair left at dawn with one animal fewer than it had arrived with, and in the morning there were hoof prints pressed into the dew along the lane, every one of them pointing west.
