Script Jesus tattoo on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised toward the camera, showing a small black script word, Jesus, tattooed on the wrist. The lettering is solid black with smooth, flowing strokes and no visible shading. The nails have white tips with black polka dot designs, and the background is a pale marble-effect tiled floor with a red object at the lower right edge.

Son, I'm writing this on the back of a dust sheet at half one in the morning because the streetlight outside the shop has finally gone out and I can't sleep for thinking about the letters. I've been at the glass on Harehills Road since ten, lettering the name over the door of Walsh's, the new bakery, in black enamel with a fine brush. Mrs Walsh wanted it swooping like a signature, the way her husband used to sign his cheques, and it took me four goes before the loops sat right.

The word is Jesus, which she tells me was her dad's cat, a big grey stray that sat on the bread racks for nine years and was never once turned out. I said nobody would ask about a cat. She said that was exactly the trouble with old names, nobody asks any more, and that's why she wanted it kept up there in the window. I'd got the J wrong three times. The last one I showed her by torchlight, and she cried a bit into the tea towel and said that'd do.
Here's the part I wanted to tell you. When the paint was dry I stood in the road with the cold coming off the pavement, and the whole street was lit orange from the chippy opposite, and the letters looked different from across the road. Lighter, like they'd been drawn in one breath. I thought of you, and the Christmas card you tried to copy my hand on, and how you gave up halfway through the second s and said it looked like a worm had got into it. I told you then that a line only looks finished once someone else has stopped looking at it.
Ring me Sunday. Bring the good pencils. Your mum says the flat in Bristol has a sink that drains backwards, so mind it. Dad.
