Small outline circle on the inner wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single small circle is tattooed on the inner wrist, with the hand visible at the top of the frame and a plain dark background behind the arm. The circle is drawn as a clean, thin black outline with no shading or fill. The image is black and white, and the skin's freckles and fine hair are visible around the tattoo.

You arrive at the scriptorium of Saint Edrith in February, when the ink has frozen in its pot and Brother Osric tells you to breathe on it until it loosens. He hands you a reed pen and a strip of vellum offcut and says nothing more until you have drawn the first circle, because the rule of the house is that a nib must be tested before it is trusted.

Your first attempts wobble like a dropped coin on a flagstone. Osric takes the strip, holds it up to the window where the grey light comes through the horn panes, and says a circle is a promise the hand makes to the eye. Each morning for a month you draw one before the psalms, and each morning he dips the old ones in water and says nothing at all. Rain has got into the cloister roof, and the bucket under the leak drips in a rhythm you learn to count.
In March a letter arrives from the abbot demanding the great chronicle be finished by Lent. Osric sends you down to the cellar for more gall ink. By lantern light you find a shelf of old test strips pinned to a board, hundreds of circles, each a little truer than the last, and in the corner a single ring so faint it looks like a thumbprint in the dust. Osric drew it the week he came to the house as a boy, he tells you later, and he never managed a better one.
You bring him the strip you have drawn that morning. He studies it for a long time, then pins it to the board with a brass tack. "Now it is kept," he says, and returns to his page. That evening you draw the next one on the inside of your wrist, where the ink will not crack, and it is the only one you never need to wash away.
