Small outline diamond on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a faceted diamond sits on the inner wrist of a hand resting on white bedding. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill inside the shape. Three bracelets, one beaded and two silver metal, are worn just below the tattoo against the pale, soft-focus background.

Maud counted the prisms twice before the lamp was lit, because her father said the Paris lens had three hundred and twelve of them and he would not have her take his word for it. Each one was cut to a point, clear as spring ice, and when the wick caught, the whole brass drum threw its light out across the water in sharp white edges. The fishermen of Corran called it the diamond light and said it was the only honest lamp on the coast, since a lamp that shows you its edges is one you can steer by.

Agnes Reel came up the rock path the night her husband's boat was late. She stood in the doorway with her shawl pulled tight and asked whether the light could be turned a little further west, just for an hour, in case Tom had lost his bearings. Maud's father said the lens could not be bent. It threw what it was made to throw and no more. Agnes said she had not asked for more, only that it be pointed where it was needed. He told her to sit by the stove.
Maud took a slate from the shelf and, while the wind leaned on the glass, drew one of the prisms on it with a stub of chalk: a flat outline, four clean lines and a point, nothing inside. She held it up to the window so the lamp caught the chalk and the shape stood out against the dark. Then she carried it down the stairs and pressed it into Agnes's hand. Keep it where you can see it, she said. It was the only thing on the rock she could make that was simply true.
At first light a single boat came round the headland, low and slow, steering on the flash of the lens. Agnes stood at the rail with the slate held against her chest, its one clean outline turned out toward the sea, and she did not look away from it until the bow touched the stones.
